Attempts At Governance - Interview

Talent Acquisition takes a significant amount of time, resources and mental capacity from teams that should rather spend their time building. The effects of a bad hire are long lasting and can add an additional burden to teams. We propose to solve this issue by guiding teams through a streamlined, optimized hiring process and multiple workshops to demonstrate best practices, fill the talent pipeline, provide access to our hiring platform and add up to 7 high-quality hires into the ecosystem.

Funds from the treasury will cover the service of sourcing, interviewing, strategizing, and placing at least 7 talent positions in key Polkadot ecosystem teams.

What each participating team gets:

  • Consulting and support on hiring best practices, setting up best-in-class job profiles, interview processes, professional outreach and improving long-term team building strategies.
  • Free access to TrufflePig, a web3 Application Tracking System
  • Growing the Polkadot talent base by funneling talent into the ecosystem
  • At least 1 hire using Missing Link’s guidance and expertise

Each team will benefit from:

  • A success-oriented long-term hiring strategy
  • Generating less monetary and cultural waste by avoiding bad hires
  • Boosting their output with experienced talent
  • Saving time by utilizing Missing Link’s highly personalized sourcing, screening and pre-interview process

A part of the Polkadot Ecosystem

Our journey in the Web3 space has been enriched by years of collaboration and partnership with prominent players in the Polkadot ecosystem. As a trusted ally to organizations like Parity, Web3 Foundation, and others, we have placed top-tier talent in key positions, contributing to their groundbreaking achievements. Our engagement with these projects has granted us deep insights into the unique requirements and dynamics of the ecosystem. We have honed our expertise in identifying talent that complements the values and objectives of the Polkadot community, laying the foundation for future success.

Polkadot Decoded 2023: A Catalyst for Collaboration

In June 2023, we had the privilege of attending Polkadot Decoded, an event that served as a melting pot of leading minds in Polkadot. There, we engaged in many conversations with dozens of forward-thinking teams seeking to elevate their projects to new heights. We understood that hiring is an ongoing pain point that needs a holistic solution. Our approach of guiding companies through a hiring process, thereby teaching them best-practices along the way received overwhelming interest and support. Many teams agree with us that it would solve a problem that could unlock future growth and ensure success of the ecosystem as a whole.

Building a Sustainable Future with Treasury Funds

Our funding request of only 1.6 Treasury Income Days Spent to the Polkadot treasury is an investment in the future of the ecosystem. While we seek support upfront to initiate our talent placement program, we understand the gravity of handling treasury funds with utmost responsibility and respect. Our well-established reputation in the industry speaks for itself, backed by a history of nurturing Web3 adoption since 2017.

Return on Investment

Each participating team would be set up for long-term hiring success, with an actionable pipeline of candidates and best practices implemented plus the commitment to at least one hire per project. The goal is that after our engagement the hiring speed and quality will be increased and there will be less of a need for external support and resources in the future.

We strongly believe that the gains generated by this proposal will not only surpass but endure well beyond the immediate treasury expenditure.

We are looking forward to hearing the community’s feedback on our proposal and working with many more teams in the Polkadot ecosystem.

Hi MissingLink,

Thank you for submitting this proposal.

It is clear that you are a credible firm that has delivered strong value to your clients.

We are trying to understand is if the Treasury is the right funding source for this, and if the timing makes sense based on the scope of the proposal.

We have a few questions so we can better assess the above:

— Hiring is certainly challenging in this space, but do ecosystem teams have a hiring need in this market, and the funding for it?

— If yes, given this proposal is for 7 teams/placements, why are those teams not working with MissingLink directly on getting specific identified headcount?

— In the filter process for who would qualify in the 7 teams, how many are you currently engaged with that haven't previously received treasury funding?

Best, Ivy

@Ivy Thanks a lot for these questions. Please find our answers below:

— Hiring is certainly challenging in this space, but do ecosystem teams have a hiring need in this market, and the funding for it? We’ve been in contact with several teams in the ecosystem for a few months now, and while it is true that there are teams that are not hiring in this market, this isn’t true for all projects. Most teams have the need to grow even in these conditions, and there are many who have expressed to us that they are in a financial position to onboard key strategic team members as long as they have a proven track record and relevant experience.

— If yes, given this proposal is for 7 teams/placements, why are those teams not working with MissingLink directly on getting specific identified headcount? There is currently no service like this in the market as the contingent model encourages  pure focus on outcomes/placements. What we learned during decoded was that the true need of these companies is learning best practices of hiring that will make them more independent from agencies, making better hires that stay longer. This is very time-intensive for us and it would not make sense to offer this service to individual companies. Running this via polkadot allows us to have synergies between the projects and pool our resources. Therefore, it is a competitive advantage for the polkadot ecosystem that is not offered anywhere else.

— In the filter process for who would qualify in the 7 teams, how many are you currently engaged with that haven't previously received treasury funding? You bring up a really good point we were not aware of before, namely that teams who have received funding from the treasury should not qualify for benefiting from this proposal because they have received funding for other work and may misappropriate the funds for hiring. We agree that adding the condition that teams who have previously received funding from the treasury will not qualify for our proposal. We would only accept teams who previously received treasury funding, only if they have:  Have delivered the work within the scope of their proposal, AND Have received the treasury funding more than one year ago. We are of course open to further suggestions on those exceptions. As it happens, most of the teams that have been in contact with us have not received treasury funding, and we are continuing to research the others to make 100% sure that they have not received funding in, e.g., another name, from the Polkadot treasury. These conditions have been added to the full proposal, under the section entitled, “Who qualifies and how will this work?”. We have been investigating how the community views treasury spending in recent months, and while there are a wide variety of opinions, we see that one common denominator is increasing the value of DOT. This is our aim with this proposal as the value of DOT is heavily dependent on the success of projects leveraging Polkadot’s infrastructure and maturing as businesses.

We arer happy to further elaborate on any of the above.

Best,

Missing Link Team

ChaosDAO would like to provide the following feedback from our community. We offer this feedback voluntarily in the spirit of OpenGov, in order to help teams improve their proposals so we can all build the network together.

  1. Some members expressed concerns about the fee amount
  2. Some members doubted that Treasury should be funding recruitment for a small number of projects
  3. Some members were unsure about the 7 included projects and suggested that they weren't adequately specified.
  4. Some members asked about the cost, and some others replied that it is not excessive for established headhunters.
  5. Some members expressed a preference for teams to hire directly from the community rather than from outside.
  6. Some members pointed out that Missing Link has an impressive track record of high level executive placements.

ChaosDAO votes as a collective based on the results of our anonymous internal voting procedures. Our members are not required provide any feedback as to why they have voted in a particular direction. Similarly, to respect our members' right to anonymity, we will not be sharing names of individuals who have chosen to voluntarily provide feedback.

@ChaosDAO

Thank you for your participation in this proposal, ChaosDAO, and we are happy to have written feedback about your current thoughts about this proposal to help business mature in their hiring strategies.

“Some members expressed concerns about the fee amount”

  • Could you please expand on these concerns? Is the fee considered too high or too low?

“Some members doubted that Treasury should be funding recruitment for a small number of projects”

  • Ok, that’s understandable, but what are the cause or foundations of these doubts? Should the proposal request more so that this could help more projects? Or is it a doubt that the work can get completed? Or that the treasury shouldn’t be used for this for a particular reason?

“Some members were unsure about the 7 included projects and suggested that they weren't adequately specified.”

  • We aim to be as fair as possible and want to include projects that have a clear position in the ecosystem. What other specifications would ChaosDao like to see?

“Some members asked about the cost, and some others replied that it is not excessive for established headhunters.”

  • We’re glad to hear that you thought the cost per hire and consultation was appropriate, but this contradicts your first point. Could you please clarify?

“Some members expressed a preference for teams to hire directly from the community rather than from outside.”

  • This is something we can get behind. For context, the original aim is to help grow the Polkadot ecosystem, and we thought that prioritizing hiring outside talent would be a good way to do this. However, after your comment and some further consideration, the growth of the Polkadot ecosystem is based on the success of the teams building in it, and the best hire will be the best hire, no matter what ecosystem they may or may not come from. We have already adjusted this in the main document. Thank you for this feedback!

“Some members pointed out that Missing Link has an impressive track record of high level executive placements.”

We’re happy that our track record shows that we are serious about our work and take care of placing proper talent in companies. We really appreciate the feedback and meeting even more community members, especially at Decoded. We will continue to work with Polkadot and hope we can continue to become more integrated with this ecosystem.
